A little Ketchup...

If you aren't currently living in Boulder County in Colorado, consider yourself lucky. Several times a year we get buffeted (No Jimmy Buffet doesn't perform here) by really high winds. I live about 12 miles east of Boulder and we're getting blasted by 80-100 mph winds as I sit here feeling my house shake and windows rattle. If anyone close to town sees Erin fly by, grab her. She's got a rod to finish building.

I've posted my thoughts on Tenkara and listened to a lot of people I respect. I'm happy to say that
Karel from Tenkara on the Fly (A very nice blog) has offered to take me out fishing. I'll be taking Karel up on his offer as soon as we can get a decent day together on the water. You might have also noticed that I added a few Tenkara blogs to my ever-growing list. I'm reading and learning and putting my money where my mouth is.

To say that I've been pleasantly surprised with my re-newly found fly tying excitement would be an understatement. I've noticed my abilities in some areas have improved although there are a few techniques that no matter how much practice I do, I just can't do it. I'll be writing a little more later about the trials and tribulations and asking for some tips from some of the great tiers around here. I posted a photo a while back of some streamers I "made up". One in particular I called The Easter Bunny. (bunny fur and green cactus chenille) I actually had someone ask me to tie some for him...for money! I'll tie some for free, because I'm not comfortable being considered a professional. My thanks to all the wonderful, professional fly tiers I know that have passed on their vast wealth of knowledge.

Speaking of Fly Tying, we've got what should be another great demonstration Saturday at Rocky Mountain Anglers. (same time, same place). I love tying with deer hair, so I expect that watching Tom Ziegler should be a real treat. You folks in the Denver area are really missing out on some great instruction.

Rocky Mountain Anglers
would like to invite you to attend a fly tying presentation, Saturday February 25th from 11am to 1pm, featuring Tom Ziegler. Using the Lacy Gee technique, Mr. Ziegler will be demonstrating his famous deer hair trout flies and ways of adapting these methods to Rocky Mountain ponds and streams. Don't miss this great opportunity to learn about these unique fly tying techniques and take advantage of our special discounts on fly tying materials!
Tom ZieglerTom Ziegler: Winner of Southern and International FFF Conclaves casting competitions, Tom developed his passion for fly fishing while pursuing trout and smallmouth bass in the Missouri Ozarks at the age 10. Mr. Ziegler has gone on to become a renowned fly tyer by developing techniques for jointed streamers which were featured in magazines such as Warmwater Fly Fishing.

* Photo top left is by my fishing buddy, Tim Wheat. I stole this off his facebook page today. Thanks Tim!

  1. Whooosh!~~Look at what the wind blew in!!! : ) Tenkara...Well, you never know if you like or don't like something until you give it a fair shot. But, being the "reel" man for so long...??? Don't let them collect dust!

    1. Emily, There's no way I'll give up my reels! My reels are my babies and I take good care of my babies.

  2. My problem with tying is my fingers are too fat. If I need something smaller that 14, I buy it.

    1. Mark, I've got stubby fingers. If I can tie a decent fly, so can you.

  5. Hey Howard.....do the folks at Rocky Mountain Anglers do YouTube videos of these demonstrations for those of us outside CO? If they don't, then can you ask them if it is something they would consider? Thanks. Has the wind died down so you can get out there and try Tenkara. It is gusty in MA today.

    1. Hi Mac, I don't think they do, although they're certainly set up for it. The wind has died down, the weather is pretty nice and I've been sick all week.
